Pearls, One of the world’s most sought after natural wonder
The love affair with pearls began
when the first coastal fish-eater opened an oyster and found this wondrous gem.
Over the millennia, because natural pearls were so rare, they became the most
valued and sought after gem. In historical documents, it is written that to show
the Romans Egyptian wealth, Cleopatra dissolved a pearl in a glass of wine for
Marc Antony valued today at approximately 5million dollars
Several myths: The Greeks believed pearls were the goddess Aphrodite’s tears of joy. Egyptians associated them with healing and life. The Incas and Aztecs cherished pearls for their beauty and magical powers and the Chinese still use powdered pearls in creams to retain their youth.
In the Roman and British Empires only rulers and very wealthy were allowed to wear pearls. Both the Holy Bible and the Koran revere pearls. In the Holy Bible Saint Peter greets at the “Pearly Gates” while in the Koran Krishna gives his daughter a pearl on her wedding day.
The greatest treasure Columbus brought back to Europe from the New World were
pearls. Pearls were so abundant in the Americas they were
soon known as “The Land where Pearls came from”.
Pearls were found in abundance in Freshwater Mussels along the Mississippi and Ohio River Basins. They were treasured in Europe until ravenous harvesting depleted the oyster beds. In the Caribbean island of Margarita (Spanish word for pearl), off the coast of Venezuela , pearls were so over harvested in the early 1500s that the oyster beds have never been able to recover.
All throughout history pearls were cherished by all but only available to the most wealthy. Now, thanks to Kokichi Mikimoto and several of his contemporaries, we have access to cultured saltwater and freshwater pearls that rival the quality of naturally occurring pearls. Freshwater pearls are comprised mostly of nacre (the material that gives a pearl it’s deep, rich, lustrous coating) because they are cultivated by introducing only tiny starting nucleus . Although, there are freshwater pearls so similar to saltwater pearls that they cannot be differentiated by the naked eye the interesting shapes and colors of freshwater pearls also lend themselves well to the imagination of many jewelry designers.
